Breast Cancer is the second most deadly cancer for women after lung cancer , the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Statistics shows that the US, India & China bear around one-third of the world breast cancer patient. Around 1.45 Lakh women in India were diagnosed with breast Cancer and approx. 70 thousand died of it according to the World Health Organization, for the year 2012.

The entire month of October is named as the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a yearly campaign that has devoted mainly to create knowledge and awareness of this disease. In a country like India, it is still an unusual concept for a general section of the people. It is mixed by false assumptions in the mind of people. Despite cases of cancer are gradually on the rise, ignorance is widely common in throughout the population of the country. It is a non-existent thing for many.

Myth – If I find a lump in my breast, I have Cancer.

Fact – 80% of the lumps in the women’s breast are caused by benign (noncancerous) changes , cysts or other conditions.


Myth – Only women with a family history of breast cancer are at risk.

Fact – 70% women diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors for the disease.


Myth – I’m too young to get breast cancer.

Fact – 25% of women with breast cancer are younger than 50 years old.


Myth – Wearing a underwire bra increases my risk of cancer

Fact – National Cancer Institute and ACS have refuted the claim that non-bra-wearers get breast cancer less often


Myth – Wearing antiperspirants increases my risk of getting breast cancer

Fact – The National Cancer Institute is not aware of any conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer.


Myth – A mammogram can cause breast cancer to spread

Fact – Radiation doses are regulated by the FDA and are fairly low; equivalent to the amount the average person receives from naturally occurring sources over three months


Myth – A dairy-free diet prevents cancer

Fact – There is no evidence to support this claim . Keep drinking milk


Myth – Men cannot get breast cancer

Fact – Each year, it is estimated that approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. 450 will die.


Myth – Plastic Surgery causes breast cancer

Fact – There is no relation between breast augmentation / plastic surgery and increased cancer risk. breast implants can make mammograms more difficult . women who undergo breast reduction surgery can see a decrease in breast cancer risk.


Myth – Cancer only comes in the form of a Lump

Fact – A lump can indicate that you have breast cancer , but women should also be aware of other bodily signals like swelling , dimpling, skin irritation, nipple/breast pain, a nipple that’s turned inward, scaliness, thickening of the breast skin/nipple, discharge that isn’t milk.


Myth – Women with small breast have reduced risks of getting cancer

Fact – There is no known connection between the likelihood of getting breast cancer and a women’s breast size.
